How long each app caches your preview

Every platform fetches your page once and keeps that copy. Here’s how long it keeps it, and the official way to make it fetch again. Checked October 2026.

Fix the page first

Refreshing only helps if your page already serves the right tags. Check the title, description and og:image with the meta tag checker before you refresh anything. Still broken? See the link preview fix guides.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn says to allow 48 hours for a preview to update on its own. Paste the URL into Post Inspector and click Inspect to fetch it again. New posts get the update; posts you already shared keep the old preview. Still broken? See the LinkedIn guide.

Facebook and Meta

Facebook re-scrapes links every 30 days on its own. To update now, open the Sharing Debugger, paste the URL and click Scrape Again. You need a Facebook login. If you changed the image, give it a new file name so the old one isn’t reused. Still broken? See the Facebook guide.

X (Twitter)

X has no refresh tool anymore. The Card Validator stopped showing previews in 2022 and now sends you to a login page, and X doesn’t document its cache time. Share the link with a query string like ?v=2 and X fetches it as a new URL. Still broken? See the X card guide.

Slack

Slack caches each preview for about 30 minutes across all workspaces, according to Slack’s robots page. There’s no refresh button: wait half an hour or post the link with ?v=2. Messages already sent keep their preview. Still broken? See the Slack guide.

Discord

Discord caches embeds for about 30 minutes. Post the link with a query string such as ?v=2 to get a fresh embed right away. Older messages keep the embed they had. Still broken? See the Discord guide.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has no official refresh tool or documented cache time. Send the link with ?v=2 added to get a new preview. Previews in messages you already sent don’t change. Still broken? See the WhatsApp guide.

Telegram

Telegram has an official bot for this. Open @WebpageBot, send it your URL and it updates the preview. You can send several links in one message.

iMessage

Apple Messages builds previews from your Open Graph tags, as described in Apple’s guide, and has no refresh tool. Send the link with a query string to get a new preview. Still broken? See the iMessage guide.

Google

Google updates your title, description and favicon when it recrawls the page. In Search Console, run URL Inspection and click Request indexing. A query string doesn’t help here, because Google shows your canonical URL.

Refresh link preview FAQ

Quick answers about stale previews and caches.

Why is my link preview not updating?

Apps save what they found the first time someone shared the link. Your page can already be fixed while LinkedIn, Facebook or Slack still show their saved copy. Check what your page serves now with the tool above, then refresh each app.

Does adding ?v=2 to a URL hurt SEO?

No, as long as the page has a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL. Search engines then treat both as the same page. Use the query string only for sharing.

Will refreshing update posts I already shared?

Usually not. LinkedIn, Slack, Discord and WhatsApp keep the preview a post had when it was sent. Refreshing changes what new shares show.

Why does the old image still show after a refresh?

Many apps cache images separately, by image URL. Upload the new image under a new file name, update og:image, then refresh again.

Is this tool free?

Yes, with no signup. It reads your page’s tags and links you to each platform’s own refresh tool. The refresh itself happens on that platform.
