LinkedIn link preview not working or not updating

LinkedIn builds the card from four og: tags and keeps a cached copy. Fix the tags, then make LinkedIn fetch the page again with Post Inspector.

Quick fix

  1. Check the page with the meta tag checker and confirm og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url are there.

  2. Make the image at least 1200 x 627 px and under 5 MB.

  3. Paste the exact URL into LinkedIn Post Inspector and click Inspect.

  4. Share the link in a new post. Old posts keep their old card.

Why the LinkedIn preview is missing or old

  • A required tag is missing. LinkedIn needs og:title, og:image, og:description and og:url. Without them it may pull other text and images from the page.

  • LinkedIn cached an earlier version. Its help center says to allow 48 hours from the last share before it refreshes on its own.

  • The image is too small. Images under 401 px wide show as a small thumbnail instead of a large card.

  • LinkedIn can’t reach the image. A firewall, bot protection or a password-protected folder blocks it even when the tags are right.

  • The URL has spaces in it. LinkedIn can’t share those at all.

How to fix it

  1. Open the page in the meta tag checker and read the tags it finds.

  2. Add any missing og: tag to the page head. Use absolute https:// URLs for og:image and og:url.

  3. Resize the image to 1200 x 627 px or larger, keep the 1.91:1 ratio and stay under 5 MB.

  4. Publish, then run the URL through Post Inspector so LinkedIn scrapes it again.

  5. Create a new post with the link and check the card before you publish it.

Tags LinkedIn reads

  • og:title for the headline

  • og:description for the text under it

  • og:image for the picture

  • og:url for the canonical address

LinkedIn’s help pages don’t mention twitter: tags, so don’t rely on them here.

Image size rules

  • Minimum 1200 x 627 px

  • Recommended ratio 1.91:1

  • Maximum file size 5 MB

  • Under 401 px wide shows as a thumbnail

How to force a refresh

Post Inspector is the official way. Paste the URL, click Inspect and check the preview. It only changes new posts; posts that are already live keep the card they had. You can also run every platform’s refresh step at once with the refresh tool.

FAQ

How long does LinkedIn cache a link preview?

LinkedIn’s help center says to allow 48 hours from the last time the URL was shared. Post Inspector refreshes it right away for new posts.

Why does LinkedIn show a small image instead of a large one?

The image is under 401 px wide, so LinkedIn shows it as a thumbnail. Use an image of at least 1200 x 627 px.

Can I update the preview on a post I already published?

No. LinkedIn says a refresh only affects new posts with the link. Delete and repost if the old card has to go.

Check your page, then refresh the preview

Paste your URL into the free checker to see the exact tags each app reads. Once the tags are right, use the refresh tool to clear the old preview.
