Use a square icon of 48 px or larger
Google shows favicons next to search results and needs a square image that’s a multiple of 48 px, like 48 × 48 or 96 × 96. An SVG favicon stays sharp at every size.
Keep a favicon.ico at the root
Some browsers, feed readers and tools still request /favicon.ico directly, even when you declare another icon. A 32 × 32 .ico file there covers them.
Add a 180 × 180 Apple touch icon
iPhones and iPads use apple-touch-icon when someone saves your site to the home screen. Without it, iOS falls back to a screenshot of the page.
Check it on a dark tab
Dark icons can disappear on dark browser tabs. Add a second, lighter icon for dark mode with the prefers-color-scheme media query, and write your icon tags with the meta tag generator.

What size should a favicon be?
Use a square icon. 32 × 32 covers browser tabs, 48 × 48 or larger is what Google needs for search results, and 180 × 180 is the Apple touch icon size. An SVG favicon scales to all of them.
Why isn’t my favicon showing in Google?
Google only shows a favicon it can crawl from your homepage. Make sure it’s square, at least 48 × 48 and not blocked by robots.txt, then give Google a few days to recrawl.
Why does my old favicon still show?
Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Do a hard refresh, open the site in a private window, or rename the file (for example favicon-v2.png) to force a fresh copy.
Which favicon format should I use?
PNG or SVG for rel="icon", plus a favicon.ico at the root for older tools. Use a PNG for the Apple touch icon, because iOS doesn’t support SVG there.
