A practical guide to viewing meta tags
Meta tags are hidden from visitors, but they shape how a page appears in search and on social apps. A meta tag viewer makes them visible in a few seconds.
What is a meta tag viewer?
A meta tag viewer loads a web page and lists the meta tags and related head elements it contains. It saves you from opening the page source and searching for each tag by hand.
How to view meta tags of a website
Enter the page URL and run the viewer. You can also right-click a page and choose View Page Source, then search for meta, but a viewer also shows previews and highlights missing tags.
Which meta tags should every page have?
A unique title, a meta description, a viewport tag, a canonical link, Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url) and twitter:card. Add a robots tag only when you need to restrict indexing.
Recommended lengths
Title about 50 to 60 characters, meta description about 140 to 160 characters, og:title under 60 characters, and an og:image of 1200 x 630 pixels.
Meta tag viewer vs. meta tag checker
A viewer shows what is on the page. A checker goes a step further and flags problems such as missing, duplicate or overly long tags. LinkPreview does both in one view.
Why the tags I see differ from the source
Some sites add or change meta tags with JavaScript after the page loads. Many crawlers only read the first HTML response, so make sure important tags are rendered on the server.
