X (Twitter) card not showing or not updating
X builds the card from twitter: tags, falling back to og: tags. There is no longer a validator that refreshes the cache, so the fix is good tags plus a fresh URL.
Last updated
Quick fix
Check the page with the Twitter card validator.
Set twitter:card to summary_large_image and add twitter:image or og:image.
Use a 2:1 image under 5 MB in JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
Share the URL with ?v=2 so X fetches it as a new link.
Why the X card is missing or old
There’s no
twitter:cardtag, or it’s set to a type you didn’t want.robots.txt or a firewall blocks
Twitterbot. X’s troubleshooting guide lists both as common causes. The image breaks a rule. SVG isn’t supported and files must be under 5 MB.
X cached the old card. Its guide says the crawler re-indexes card tags roughly every seven days.
The image URL didn’t change. Caches key on the image address, so a new image needs a new URL.
How to fix it
Run the URL through the Twitter card validator to see the card X will build.
Add
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">.Point
twitter:imageorog:imageat a unique image for the page, not your logo.Allow Twitterbot in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall rules.
Share the link with a query string such as
?v=2to get a fresh fetch.
Tags X reads

Image size rules
Aspect ratio 2:1 for summary_large_image
Minimum 300 x 157 px, maximum 4096 x 4096 px
Under 5 MB
JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF (first frame only); no SVG
How to force a refresh
X has no refresh tool. The Card Validator lost its preview in 2022. Share the URL with a new query string, or change the image URL when you replace the image. Posts already published keep their card. The refresh tool has the steps for every app.
Not verified: X removed its card documentation from developer.x.com. The rules on this page come from the archived 2024 version of X’s docs and may have changed.

What image size works for a Twitter summary_large_image card?
A 2:1 image between 300 x 157 px and 4096 x 4096 px, under 5 MB, in JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
How do I refresh a Twitter card?
There’s no official refresh button any more. Share the URL with a new query string so X fetches it again.
Does X use Open Graph tags?
Yes, as a fallback. If twitter:title, twitter:description or twitter:image are missing, X uses the og: version.
