Shopify social sharing image not working
Shopify chooses the share image in a fixed order: theme code, then theme settings, then the image in Preferences. Uploading to the wrong place is the most common cause.

Quick fix
Check the store URL with the meta tag checker.
Look for a social image setting in your theme first; it overrides Preferences.
Otherwise set it in Online Store, Preferences, Social sharing image and SEO.
Refresh the link in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger.
Why the Shopify image isn’t showing
The theme overrides Preferences. Shopify uses images in this order: hard-coded in theme code, then theme settings for social media or checkout, then the Preferences image.
Your theme only uses its own setting. Some themes ignore the Preferences image entirely.
The page has its own image. Product, collection and blog post links use that page’s featured image in Shopify’s free themes.
No image is set anywhere, so Shopify falls back to your logo and pads it with the background color.
The platform cached the old preview.
How to fix it
Open the URL in the meta tag checker and see which
og:imageit serves. In Online Store, Themes, Edit theme, Theme settings, look for Social media or Social sharing and set the image there if it exists.
If the theme has no setting, go to Online Store, Preferences and add the image under Social sharing image and SEO.
For products, collections and posts, set a featured image on that item.
Remove the storefront password before testing. Shopify’s community support notes that a password page hides your tags.
Click Scrape Again in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger.
Tags Shopify themes output
Shopify’s free themes add Open Graph tags for you: og:title, og:description, og:url and og:image. Custom themes may differ, so check the live HTML.
Image size rules
Facebook: 1200 x 630 px recommended, minimum 200 x 200 px, max 8 MB
LinkedIn: minimum 1200 x 627 px, max 5 MB
WhatsApp: under 600 KB
Shopify pads logos that don’t fit the recommended size or have a transparent background. Use a full-bleed image instead. Check the file with the OG image size checker.
How to force a refresh
Shopify can’t clear Facebook’s or LinkedIn’s cache. Use the Sharing Debugger and Post Inspector, and share the URL with a query string on X, Slack and Discord. The refresh tool has every step.
